The Newport's standard engine was the 383 V8. The only optional engine in 1969 and early 1970 for the Newport was the 440-TNT engine with hotter cam, dual exhaust and other small refinements resulting in a 375 hp output. However, the regular 440 engine, being standard in New Yorkers and 300's, was not available in Newports. Perhaps it was popular demand or a new model/engine combination offered by the competition that convinced Chrysler management to offer this engine also for the Newports in December 1969, together with a dress-up package for the car, called the Newport 440. It came with special model designation molding, bodyside rub strip, vinyl roof and of course the 440 engine coupled to an automatic transmission. |
